Learning Two Switch Step Scanning
features 21 activities
grouped into 7 lessons
Lesson 1 - Single Switch Cause & Effect (A prerequisite for step scanning) Pressing one switch initiates various animated geometric segments on the screen.
Lesson 2 - Two Switches Operating Independently
The screen is split down the middle with the left switch initiating animation on the left side of the screen only and the right switch initiating animation on the right side of the screen only.
Lesson 3 - Two Switches with Interaction Between Switches
Example: Two boys are facing each other on opposite ends of the screen. The left switch triggers the boy on the left side to kick a soccer ball to the boy on the right. The right switch will trigger the boy on the right to kick the soccer ball to the boy on the left.

based upon the prompt on the left.
|
Match Maker + Quiz Creator is a robust program for creating matching activities and matching related quizzes. Match Maker + Quiz Creator also comes with many premade activities. Activities can be played in two different modes, "Game Mode" and "Quiz Mode".
In "Quiz Mode", there is a prompt and a set of buttons called responses, only one of which is the correct response. The prompt is the information on one of the buttons of a matching pair. The second button in the matching pair which is the correct response is placed on the game board. Buttons from other matching pairs in the quiz are then placed on the game board as incorrect responses. The student must select the correct response using switches, a touch window, the computer keyboard, or a mouse click. Up to 8 responses can be placed on the game board in quiz mode.
In "Game Mode", matching pairs appear on the screen. One button is randomly picked which is called the "Prompt". The student has to select the corresponding match. Selections are made by using switches, a touch window, the computer keyboard, or a mouse click. When the student correctly matches the prompt, the matching pair disappears. When all of the matching pairs are correctly matched, a new set appears. Matching pairs do not have to be identical. One example of a matching pair is matching a word and associated picture such as the word "apple" and a picture of an apple. Another example would be matching the word "one" with the number "1". You can specify anywhere between 2 and 5 matching pairs to appear on the game board at a time.
In either mode, the student is presented with a prompt, one correct response button, and a number of incorrect response buttons. Though Match Maker + Quiz Creator comes with many premade activities, Match Maker + Quiz Creator also allows you to create your own activities.
The program also has an import and export feature to give you the ability to copy your activities to other computers with Match Maker + Quiz Creator installed on them.
The premade matching activities supplied with the program cover: Shapes, Jobs, Cars, Colors, Foods, Miscellaneous Objects, Numbers and Words, Money, Sign Language, Sounds, Telling Time, US States and Capitals, What Letter is Missing, Words and Objects.

Paddle Sizes, Ball Speed, and Skill Level can be adjusted for each side separately. |
Paddle Pong is a two player classic arcade style game designed specifically for individuals with special needs. The players can use the program with a variety of input devices simultaneously to move their respective paddles. For switch users, two switches are used for each player, one to move the paddle up and the other to move it down.
The program allows you to customize the settings for each player based on player's abilities. This allows you to make the game equal even if the players are not. This game is also a great way to have individuals without special needs play with individuals with special needs. Paddle Pong allows you to customize each player's indivual settings. These settings include the size and color of the paddle, the speed of the ball, the skill level, and the amount of points to win. Other game options include setting the background color and the size of the ball.

One of the many customized game boards that can be created in minutes. |
Pick & Choose is a versatile program modeled after the popular soundboard story books. Anywhere between 1 and 10 choice buttons with pictures or text on them are displayed on a game board at a time. A game can have up to 1,000 choice buttons associated with it. A choice button is pressed by using switches, a touch window, the computer keyboard, or a mouse click. When a choice button is pressed, a reward is presented as either a reward picture, reward text, music file, sound effect, or movie clip. Once a choice button is pressed and a reward is given, the choice button disappears. This is to prevent the student from pressing the same choice button repeatedly. When all of the choice buttons are pressed, a new set of choice buttons is presented.
Pick & Choose also has a robust feature for creating quizzes.
Though Pick & Choose comes with many premade games (including quizzes) and an extensive library of choice buttons, Pick & Choose also allows you to create new games by giving you the ability to create your own choice buttons with your own graphics and sounds. Pick & Choose also has an import and export feature to give you the ability to copy your games and choice buttons to other computers with Pick & Choose installed on them.
Pick & Choose gives you a variety of game board colors and choice button colors to customize your game. It also allows you to place the choice buttons horizontally or vertically on any side of the board. Choice buttons can dynamically be made larger or smaller during a game by pressing the "+" or "-" keys. This feature is useful for touch window users to practice fine motor skills. A page out of the story "Good Manners for Circle Time"
The story emphasizes having good manners during circle time. When the student writes their story, they get to choose whether Susan should sit on a blue chair or on a red chair. The story shows how Susan doesn't get angry if she didn't get to sit on the color chair that she wanted. The story also emphasizes how you should keep your hands to yourself during circle time, and not getting angry if the teacher calls on someone else. |
Build a story, write a story, and read a story, all in one fun and easy program! Story Builder gets a student involved in creating stories that they can interactively read on the screen, or optionally print. Students write their books by assembling pre-written pages related to a topic that they choose, such as "The Class Trip". Not only can the student choose to write a particular page to their book, or skip a particular page, they can also control the path that the story takes. For example, in "The Class Trip" they can choose to write about going to the zoo, or going to the aquarium. Once they make a decision, for example, the zoo, they can choose to include (or not to include) pages about various animals. Students can read or write their books using a mouse, 1 or 2 switches, or a touch window. Data is collected for each student that can be viewed in a spreadsheet or text format.
The program can also be used to create personalized photo albums.
Story Builder comes with a collection of pre-written pages, called story templates. Story Builder comes with 25 different story templates covering a wide variety of topics.
Here's how it works:
Student selects a topic to write about

Student chooses the path that the story takes

Student chooses which pages to write

Switch Accessible Boombox is a software program that allows a user to utilize a virtual stereo (boombox). The program allows you to play your favorite songs or video clips through this boombox. The buttons on the boombox are pressed using one switch with timed scanning, two switches with step scanning or directly pressing them with a touch window or mouse. Optionally, auditory scanning of the buttons can be turned on.
In its simplest form, it can also be used as a very basic single switch Cause & Effect program. Pressing the switch will stop and start the music.
This program has the added benefit of not only playing songs but movie clips as well. The song formats that the program can play are MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), WAV (Wave Files) and MID (Midi Files). Valid movie formats are MPG, WMV and AVI.
Optionally, speech synthesis (included with this program) will read the title of the song or movie clip before it is played. The buttons that appear on the screen (play, skip, raise volume..) can either be displayed as words or pictures. Buttons can be removed from the boombox in order to simplify the choices.

In this particular activity, the task is to put the colored pegs into the matching colored slots. If using 2 switches, pressing the first switch will move the hand, pressing the second switch will either pick up or put down the peg. If using 1 switch, the hand will move from one slot to the next automatically and stop for a pre-specified number of seconds. Pressing the switch will either pick up or put down the peg. |
VIRTUAL MOTOR SKILLS - is a software program designed to give the user with limited motor skills the virtual experience of performing tasks by picking up, putting down, and moving objects around using 1 or 2 switches, a mouse click, or the computer keyboard. In many of the activities, the user controls a life-like hand to complete tasks such as picking up colored pegs and placing them in their matching colored slots. Sounds like it may be difficult or too complex? Well, it couldn't be easier.
In the example of the pegboard, the hand will hover over the pegboard. If the hand is over a peg, pressing the switch will pick up the peg. If the hand is holding a peg and a switch is pressed, it will put the peg down. It's that simple.
The program is composed of the following 27 tasks that involve sorting, matching, sequencing, and vocational themes.
- 5 Different Pegboard activities with various degrees of difficulty
- Put in the light bulbs
- Put the lollypops on the sticks
- Put the tennis balls into the can
- Put the paper into the printer
- Pick up the trash and throw it into the garbage can
- Put all the coins into the piggy bank
- Put the groceries into the shopping bag
- Put the crayons into the crayon box
- Put the wafers into the box
- Pour the grape juice into the cups
- Hammer the nails into the wood
- Stack the blocks to build one big tower
- Match the shoes
- Put the rings on the peg in size order with the biggest on the bottom
- Sharpen the pencils and put them into the pencil holder
- Put the colored boxes over the matching color word
- Sort the objects into the containers with the same shape
- Sort the nuts and bolts
- Sort the silverware
- Put the bottles and cans into the proper recycling container
- Point to the numbers from lowest to highest
- Point to the letters in alphabetical order

The student selects a picture by activating the spinner with a switch, mouse or touch-screen. Once the picture is selected and the sound is played, a new picture will take its place. Over 90 pictures come with the program. You can also add your own pictures. |
WHEEL OF SOUNDS is a switch-activated game that plays an object's sound when the object is selected by the spinner. The spinner is activated by either step scanning, timed scanning, a single switch press, a mouse or touch-screen. Once the picture is selected and the sound is played, a new picture will take its place. Wheel of Sounds gives you the capability of setting the field of pictures to display 2, 3 or 4 pictures at a time, creating customized games by selecting only certain pictures to include in a game, and optionally adding your own pictures and sounds. Included with the program are separate games for pictures of various objects, a game for letters, a game for colors and a game for numbers. Auditory scanning is built into the program.
Wheel of Sounds can optionally be used as a matching activity. When "Matching" is turned on, One of the pictures in the field of pictures is copied to the center of the spinner. The student must now select the picture that matches the one in the center of the spinner. If the picture chosen does not match, a voice will tell the student that the picture doesn't match and the sound associated with the picture is not played. If the picture matches, the computer will say "very good" and then it will play the sound associated with the picture. Statistics on the percentages of correct and incorrect matches are optionally saved to monitor the student's progress.
Skills Introduced: Cause & Effect, Scanning, Sound Recognition, Matching, Letter, Number and Color Recognition |
